Lucy R. Benham practices in the areas of business law, real estate law, probate and estate planning. Ms. Benham is an adjunct professor at Walsh College teaching Legal Issues in Management in the MBA program and the undergraduate program, and an Adjunct Professor at University of Detroit Mercy Law School for the 2012-2013 terms.
Ms. Benham graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 with a Bachelor in General Studies and from Wayne State University Law School in 1986 with a JD, cum laude. She earned an Associate in Risk Management Certificate from the Insurance Institute of America in 2002. In 2011, Ms. Benham completed the Civil Mediation Training and now offers mediation and facilitation services.
Ms. Benham is a Past President of National Association of Women Business Owners, Greater Detroit Chapter (NAWBO). She was a 1990-1991 recipient of the NAWBO Community Service Award and was the Public Policy Representative to the National Board for the 1994-1996 term. She attended the 1995 White House Conference on Small Business in Washington, DC as an elected Michigan Delegate, and has served as co-chair of the 2001 National NAWBO Annual Meeting that was held in Detroit, June 7 through June 10, 2001.
Ms. Benham is a member of Women Impacting Public Policy, Inc., a 501(c)(6) non-partisan business organization which represents and advocates the small business interest in federal and state legislative matters. In addition, she serves as a Hearing Panelist for the Michigan Attorney Grievance Board, and as the Vice President and Chair of the Finance Committee for The Village Club Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Michigan non-profit corporation that provides grants to grass roots 501 (c)(3) organizations that assist families with food, clothing and other services in the Metro Detroit area (Term 5/1/2014 -4/30/2016).
Ms. Benham provided pro bono legal services and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Sky Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) Michigan non-profit corporation dedicated to fund research in pancreatic cancer from its inception in 2008 through June 2014.
Ms. Benham was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Forgotten Harvest, Inc., a Michigan nonprofit corporation and served as President of the Board of Directors for the 1994-1996 term. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit from 2002 to 2004.
Ms. Benham is a graduate of Leadership Detroit XIX, Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce.
Ms. Benham was named among Detroit's 100 most influential women in the March 31, 1997 edition of Crain's Detroit Business and was selected as one of the 1999 Ten Women Business Owners of Distinction by NAWBO.
