Walsh College Preparations

Walsh College is monitoring the status of the H1N1 flu virus and has a pandemic preparedness plan that includes employee and academic policies and procedures that would take effect in the event of significant absences.

At this time, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is not recommending closure of schools. Unless a government agency recommends or requires otherwise, the goal of Walsh College is to maintain operations to the best of our ability. We are working closely with the Oakland County Health Department to monitor flu conditions and will follow their guidance in making decisions about the best steps to take concerning our operations.

If Walsh does modify its policies or operations, students will be notified through their WalshMail accounts, the student portal, the Walsh Twitter page, and the Walsh Web site.

Preventive Measures

The College follows Oakland County Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for disinfecting hard surfaces that are touched often or touched by more than one person. These include desks, door handles, countertops, copiers, faxes, phones, etc.  Alcohol-based hand cleaners are available in high-traffic areas, classrooms, and the cafeterias.

Prior to using computer keyboards in the labs and libraries, students and visitors are asked to wipe them with the disinfectant wipes that are provided.

Practice good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  Cover coughs or sneezes using your elbow or shoulder instead of your hands when a tissue is not available.

Consider a regular seasonal flu shot. Talk to your health care provider to find out if you should be vaccinated for seasonal flu and/or 2009 H1N1 flu. Information about 2009 H1N1 flu vaccination can be found at: www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination.
