Suggested Classroom Exercises – Internet Safety for Tweens & Teens

For these exercises you need a computer and classroom projector.

Exercise 1:  Amy & Her “Friend”

Our first exercise is about a young girl named Amy who met her online friend

What motivated Amy to confide in an online “friend.”

  • She thought it was easier to talk to strangers – that you could tell them things you couldn’t tell anyone else.
  • She didn’t think she had anyone to talk to about what was going on in her life.

What did her online “friend” tell her to gain her trust?

  • He listened and sympathized.
  • He told her the grass is greener on his side.
  • He said, “I’ll take care of you, until you can take care of yourself.”

What were some of the warning signs for Amy?

  • She knew how old he was.
  • She acknowledged that “he was like a stranger.”
  • He came to her house.

What were some of the mistakes Amy made?

  • He knew where I lived, he knew what my phone number was and he could call me anytime.

What did Amy realize in the end?

  • Most of her friends were going through the same problems as she was.
  • Her online friend told her he’s done it before, but didn’t get caught. Where are they are?
  • You never know who that person is or what that person is capable of.
  • It’s very scary

Encourage your students to talk candidly about the subject; the more discussion the better.  You might be surprised by what you hear but open communication is the best preventative measure for these scenarios.

Amy said it best when she said, “I was lucky that I’m not dead on the road right now – six feet under.”
