Suggested Classroom Exercises – Internet Safety for Kids
K-5 Exercise 1: This scenario involves one boy name David. After school David likes to play baseball
with his friends. In fact, they are
all on a team. Their team is called
the Bears; David is the catcher for his team.
When David is not in school or playing baseball or doing other fun
things, he likes to surf the Internet.
David’s favorite place to surf is a chat room where his screen name is
bear10 after his team name and number. David has a safety challenge – how to stay safe while having
fun on the Internet. Following is a transcript of conversations between David and
his online friend mach1. mach1> Hi
bear10, how was school today? bear10> Okay,
I guess, the usual. mach1> Yea I know. School can be a drag sometime. So, did you do anything fun after school? bear10> Yea!
Me and some friends played baseball.
We have our own team. I’m the
catcher. mach1> Catcher?
That sounds pretty cool, what’s the name of your team? bear10> We’re the bears. mach1> Awesome, I like baseball. Do you think I could join? bear10> Are you any good? mach1> You bet! bear10> We have tryouts every Thursday at the
park on Elms, right after school. mach1> Great!
I’ll see you then. §
What did David do wrong? §
What are some things he could have done differently? §
What would you do if an online friend wanted to meet
you? Suggestions §
David told his online friend too much information about
him. §
His screen name gave away too much information about him
– the team he played, his team number, even where and when he practiced. §
But the biggest mistake David made was agreeing to meet
his online friend. §
Just because someone you meet online tells you they’re a
kid just like you, doesn’t mean it’s true. §
Because you can’t see the person – you really don’t know
if they’re telling you the truth or not. §
Never, ever agree to meet an online person. They could be someone trying to trick you
or hurt you. §
Anytime an online friend asks to meet you – tell your mom
and dad right away! They will know
what to do. |
