Suggested Classroom Exercises – Teaching Ethics to K-5

Exercise 2:  Free Sure Sounds Good to Me!

This scenario involves three young girls.  Their ethical challenge is about copying music without paying for it.

Cindy and Debbie have been friends for a long time.  They live next door to each and enjoy a lot of the same things.  One thing they both like to do together is listening to music.  But CD’s cost a lot of money.  Cindy and Debbie find out from their friend Maggie that they can copy music for free using Maggie’s new computer.  Free sure sounds good!

§         Is this a good thing to do?

§         Why or why not?

§         Why is this stealing?

§         What else could they do instead?

Suggestions

§         No!  It may seem harmless, but this is stealing.

§         Maggie or her parents bought her the CD it was for her to listen to.

§         When the CD was bought, the people who made the CD people got paid for their hard work.  People like the musician, the recording company, even the store where they bought it.

§         When someone makes copies of CD’s, those people don’t get paid for all their hard work.
