Suggested Classroom Exercises – Teaching Ethics to K-5

Exercise 1:  The Homework Challenge

This scenario involves two boys in elementary school.  Their ethical challenge is about homework and cheating.

Adam and Brian are good friends and are in the same class.  They enjoy the same fun after school activities and spend a lot of time together. Their teacher, Mrs. Wright, gives the class a math assignment.  Part of the instructions for the assignment is that each student should do his/her own work.  The purpose of the assignment is to assess each student’s abilities to determine where extra help may be needed.

Adam is better at math than Brian.  Brian has trouble with some of the questions and asks to copy Adam’s work.

§         What should Adam do?

§         Why is it important that they do their own work?

§         What if Brian gets mad and won’t be Adam’s friend anymore?

§         Why is this cheating?

§         Is there a way Brian can handle this without cheating and still keep his friend?

Suggestions

§         Adam should say no.

§         Adam could remind Brian that if he copies his work Mrs. Wright won’t be able to help Brian if he needs extra help.

§         Adam could volunteer to help Brian with other math assignments, so that Brian can be as good at math as he is.
