Online Safety for Kids

Surfing the Internet, learning all kinds of new things and meeting new people is a fun thing to do on the computer.

Your Mom and Dad make rules that help keep you safe like making sure you look both ways before crossing the street and not talking to strangers.

Now that Mom and Dad have let you play on a computer, there’s another set of rules you need to learn in order to be safe.

Good Things to Do:

  • The first and best thing you can do is always talk to your parents about being safe on the computer.
  • Anytime you see anything that is confusing or scary – tell Mom and Dad right away!  They will always help you!
  • Ask Mom and Dad for help in finding fun sites for kids like you to visit on line.  They want you to have fun and learn new things.

Bad Things to Never Do:

Never – ever give out any personal information that could help someone find you – like:

  • Your real name – make a fun alias to use on line.  An alias is like a nickname.
  • Your address – never tell anyone where you live – not a street, not a city, not anything!
  • Your telephone number – nobody needs your phone number to talk with you on line.
  • Never send anyone a picture of yourself; this could help a bad person find you – and we want you to be safe.

Never agree to meet anyone you meet on line.  If someone asks you to meet them – tell Mom and Dad right away; they will know the right thing to do.

Always Remember:

You may think the person you are talking to on line is a kid just like you.  But because  you can’t see them – and because some times people don’t tell the truth – they may be tricking you.  You may think you’re chatting with a kid when really it’s an adult.
