For these exercises you need a computer and classroom projector.

Exercise 2:  Your Online Trail

Our second exercise shows us how easy it is for the wrong person to find you if you reveal too much personal information on line.

From web postings and a member profile within 45 minutes 5 complete stranger knew:

  • Teresa’s full name
  • her email address
  • personal hobbies
  • the complete names of her parents and younger brother
  • her address
  • how to get to her house
  • the time of day she is likely to be at home
  • what schools are nearby

Questions for your class:

  • Where you surprised by how easy it was to find Teresa?
  • What do you think about it?
  • What did we learn?
  • What were some of the things Teresa did right?
  • What were some of the things she could have better?

Reinforce with your class that they should never give out any personal information that could help someone find them – like:

  • Your real name – always use an alias
  • Your address – never tell anyone where you live – not even a street or city
  • Your telephone number – nobody needs your phone number to talk with you on line.
  • Never send anyone a picture of yourself
  • Never agree to meet anyone you meet on line.  If someone asks you to meet them – talk to your parents or other trusted adult right away
