Suggested Classroom Exercises – Internet Safety for Kids K-5

Exercise 1:
An Unfriendly Chat

In this scenario, Steve and his friends spend time in a chat room, talking about the usual stuff, school, sports, movies.  A lot of the kids go to the same school and they know each other’s screen names.  So they know who’s sending what on line.

It’s all a lot of fun until Andre enters the chat room.

One of Steve’s friends, Marc, just doesn’t like Andre so he says mean things to him.  He wants to scare Andre out of the room for good.

One day when Andre arrives in the chat room, Marc is even meaner!  He tells Andre that if he doesn’t get out and stay out, he’ll be sorry!  He says that he knows where Andre lives, where he goes to school and he better stay out of the chat room for good!

§         What do you think about this story?

§         Who is wrong here?

§         What should Steve do?

§         What should Andre do?

§         Is there anybody that could help Andre?

Suggestions:

§         Marc should not have been mean to Andre.

§         Steve and his friends could have told Marc to stop.

§         Threatening people online isn’t just mean – it’s against the law.

§         Marc could get in a lot of trouble for threatening Andre.

§         Andre should leave the chat room and tell his parents so they could call the police.
