Tuesday, May 21, 2013 - Walsh College Board of Trustees Appoints Three to Foundation Board of Directors

The Walsh College Board of Trustees has elected three new members to three-year terms on the Walsh College Foundation Board of Directors: Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Development, McDonald’s Corp, Jerry Schafer of Raleigh, North Carolina; Mike Ziecik, a founding principal and partner in Forum Group in Bloomfield Hills; and Birmingham resident Brian Pilarski from Brown and Brown Insurance Inc.

Jerry Schafer has led McDonald’s development in China since 2004. He began his career at McDonald’s while in high school in Eastpointe, Mich., and excelled academically at Macomb Community College and Walsh College.

Currently a board member with the Ronald McDonald House, Schafer is a supporter of the Blackstone LaunchPad at Walsh, which offers services to Walsh students and alums looking to grow their ideas into a business. Schafer earned a bachelor’s of accountancy from Walsh College in 1975.

Mike Ziecik is a founding principal and partner in Forum Group, a privately-owned commercial real estate brokerage and consulting firm in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Ziecik began his career at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell (PMM), a real estate consulting group which became KMPG International. Following his tenure at PMM, Mike became a founding partner of Encore International (now AT&T Capital), responsible for its Washington, D.C. investment banking group.  

Ziecik is currently a member of the Michigan Association of CPAs, the Commercial Board of Realtors – Michigan, the Urban Land Institute, and CoreNet Global. Ziecik received his undergraduate degree from the University of Detroit with a bachelor’s of science in accounting and math, earned a master’s of science in taxation from Walsh College in 1981, and an MBA from the University of Michigan.

Brian Pilarski is a commercial agent with Brown & Brown Insurance Inc. in Sterling Heights, Mich, where he helps his clients with commercial insurance placement and risk management solutions. His client base encompasses all 50 states, as well as various worldwide exposures. Brown & Brown Insurance is the second largest insurance agency in Michigan and the seventh largest nationwide, with almost $1 billion in annual revenue. 

Pilarski has served actively on the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2008, including the role of president for four years. Pilarski is also a partner with Cornerstone Charter Schools, which provides educational opportunities for Detroit children. He completed his bachelor’s of science in business administration at Central Michigan University in 2002 and earned a master’s of science in management from Walsh College in 2007.

Established in 2004, the Walsh College Foundation serves as the official fundraising arm of the College.  The Foundation’s purpose is to encourage private giving and to ensure the integrity of the College’s philanthropy program. Walsh alumni comprise 74 percent of the 23-member Foundation Board of Directors. It is staffed by employees of the College and led by volunteers who are business, industry, and community leaders.
