Michael P. Levens, Ph.D., chair of marketing, information systems, and quantitative methods, and associate professor of marketing at Walsh College, has returned after completing a Fulbright Specialist Fellowship in Riga, Latvia, at the University College of Economics and Culture. While abroad, Dr. Levens conducted a course on academic research methods in business and social sciences for graduate students from January 27 through March 11, 2013.
In addition to his role as an instructor, Dr. Levens worked with the United States Embassy in Riga, consulting on marketing strategies with business incubators in Riga, Daugavpils and Jelgava. Dr. Levens also presented lectures to university faculty, advised students and consulted with individual Latvian businesses on their marketing plans.
“This experience has given me the opportunity to work with different businesses, universities and other organizations to learn about the many exciting initiatives happening both academically and in the business landscape in other parts of the world,” said Dr. Levens regarding his experience. “I look forward to sharing my experiences with students and colleagues at Walsh College.”
The United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administers the Fulbright Specialist Program, in partnership with the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. The program is the U.S. government's flagship academic exchange effort. Once accepted into the program, grantees lecture and research across a wide array of academic and professional fields.
Dr. Levens is one of more than 400 U.S. faculty and professionals expected to travel abroad in 2013 through the Fulbright Specialist Program. Created in 2000 to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, the Fulbright Specialist Program provides short-term academic opportunities to prominent U.S. faculty and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at post-secondary academic institutions around the world. Dr. Levens is the third Walsh staff member to receive a Fulbright award, joining Sheila Ronis, Ph.D., and Nancy Brzozowski, director of the Walsh College Troy library.

In 2006, Dr. Levens, a native of Lake Orion, Mich., joined Walsh College after serving General Motors for 21 years, where he held a variety of marketing leadership positions. He has extensive global experience, working in 40 countries on five continents. An accomplished author, his textbooks are used by colleges and universities across the world, and he regularly provides consulting services to Fortune 100 companies and major non-profits. Throughout his career, Dr. Levens has focused his research on affluent consumer behavior and non-traditional bundling strategies. He has conducted more than 100 research projects worldwide and has presented his research at conferences hosted by the Advertising Research Foundation, Association of Marketing Theory and Practice, American Marketing Association, Automotive Market Research Council and the Canadian Marketing Association. Dr. Levens is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and an active member of the American Marketing Association, the Association for Consumer Research and MENSA. He also serves as
director and marketing chair of the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble and the Detroit Skating Club.
