Memories of Walsh College

This year, Walsh College celebrates 90 years, and the campus is abuzz with preparation for Homecoming on Saturday, September 22, 2012.  As the manager of the Alumni & Student Life Office, I constantly hear stories and memories of Walsh College and why alumni keep coming back.

Donald Carr, class of 1963, tells tales of getting stuck in the elevator in the 120 Madison Avenue building and of seeing Mervyn Walsh walking the halls, wearing the same-looking dark pinstripe suit every day.

Jeffrey Groen, class of 1974, president and managing partner of Groen, Kluka & Company, PC, used the Career Services’ job board to get a bookkeeping job during his undergraduate studies.

A member of the Walsh College Board of Trustees and class of 1990, Dave Petoskey says, “Walsh College attracted me as a student because of its focus on a real-world education. It attracts me today as a volunteer and donor because I can see how its students, alumni, and business relationships strengthen Southeast Michigan and the community I love.”

Walsh College celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1972 with an alumni dinner. Pictured are, from left, Howard Wendell, Don Carr, Don Clayton, Terry Kaye, Archie Waring, and Larry Butala.

Making your mark on Walsh College as an alumnus

Several graduates of Walsh Institute wanted to give back to the school that gave them so much, and pay it forward for the Institute’s students.  On October 17, 1928, they formed the Walsh Institute Alumni Association.  Over 80 years later, the organization is now known as the Walsh College Alumni Association (WCAA). Alumni are still giving back to the College and paying it forward to the College’s students through the Walsh College Annual Fund, Walsh College Alumni Association Scholarship, and involvement with WCAA events.

Many have left their mark on Walsh College.  Joseph McIntyre was the editor of the first Walsh Alumni News. Donald Carr, class of 1963, Past President Walsh College Alumni Association 1979 to 1980, wrote, typed and published the monthly newsletter.  Donald also helped start the alumni association’s first, and very successful, Las Vegas Night. Brian Pilarski, class of 2007 is the only Past President to serve two terms.

I have learned that Walsh College is rich with history through these stories from our alumni.
