Candidates for President

*Candidate with most votes will serve as President of the WCAA/ second runner up will serve as Vice President

Alex Schwallbach - BBA '04, MSM '07

I get involved with the WCAA because I greatly value my degrees from Walsh College and I enjoy giving back to the communities in which I live and work. My original reason for joining the WCAA was to assist a student(s) to finish their degree from a financial perspective.

My hope was to provide the needed funding to push someone to graduate. The idea being when they went to apply for a job instead of checking high school or some college they could instead check the bachelor degree checkbox. Since then my aspirations have grown a bit in that I would like to someday create my own scholarship. In the mean time I would continue to work with the board in creating another endowed scholarship in addition to the one we already have.

Lisa Mattern - BBA '06, MBA '10

Becoming President of the WCAA board would be an honor and a privilege. It would represent another accomplishment in my life. It would continue my quest to be a great role model for my children. It would allow me to join a great group of diverse people to share ideas and bring excitement to the Alumni Association. What I would bring to the board is my years of experience in the working world and be able to share the changes that have occurred. It would also enable me to keep current on the rising trends. I have very creative ideas and enjoy brainstorming to make things better. I enjoy networking and socializing as well as educating. I am an excellent public speaker and can motivate people to see things more realistically. I look forward to sharing these with you and the fellow board members.

Lisa Mattern, Owner of Cruise Planners-Lisa & Dan Mattern, a Travel Planner Franchise, joined the WCAA Board in 2015. Since 2015, Mattern has been active participant and sponsor of many WCAA events. Because of Ms. Mattern’s involvement and commitment to the WCAA, she was invited to join the board and in October 2015, she became an active board member. Mattern is proud to be a female business owner. As a travel planner, Lisa works closely with her clients and helps them create lifelong memories. She works with them to find the perfect trip all while staying within their budget. She also participates in the Sterling Heights Public Library Community Series as a speaker bringing travel related information to the attendees. Previously, Ms. Mattern worked in the home improvement industry as an Operations Manager for over 20 years. In this role, she was responsible for all of the associates in the retail stores, scheduling, customer service, operational accuracy, audits, cash handling, training, and auditing. She received her AA-Liberal Arts, AA- general Business, BBA –Business Management (Walsh) and MBA – Strategic Leadership (Walsh). In addition to being on the WCAA board, she is also an active volunteer for Kid’s Burn Camp, a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and a SOAR trained volunteer for burn survivors. Ms. Mattern is married to Dan; they have been married for 27 years. Together they have two children. Their son, Andrew, is 26 and lives in New Hampshire. He is a paramedic and a drummer in a touring band. Their daughter, Katryna, is 21 and a senior at Grand Valley State University where she is studying Psychology. Lisa envisions the role of the alumni association as a path to guide all graduates and help build upon both academic experiences and personal relationships. As the alumni association grows, so will the community as we can foster the interests of many people and build great relationships within our community.

I have truly enjoyed my time as a member of the WCAA board. It’s been a great opportunity to meet many professionals in several different fields. I’ve made new friends and been exposed to opportunities that I otherwise wouldn’t experience. I am running for the treasurer position so that I can continue to use my skills to better the board and the entire WCAA. ~Chrissy
