Task…write a blog. Experience writing a blog...Potential problem?
When asked to write a blog, my initial response was, “I don’t like writing about myself”. Well, when I sat down to really think about it… this is not about me. This is about you. This is about you as a future Walsh College student, this is about you as a current Walsh College student, and this is about you as an alumnus of Walsh College.
When you’re done reading this, I want you to have an image of Walsh College that is so vivid and fresh in your mind that you could reach out and touch it, feel it, and sense it. Ultimately, believe that you are a part of Walsh College in its entirety.
When asked to describe my experiences at Walsh or why I am so fond of the college, it is usually fairly simple for me to put into a few short words. “I love Walsh College”. Why? “Because I just do”. I know I have to give more then that, dive deeper, and give a breakdown of everything that has encompassed that feeling of love, admiration, and fulfillment.
My love for Walsh began on a hot, summer day in August. It was a Wednesday, and that meant there was no better time then the present to take advantage of Walk in Wednesday’s at Walsh. As I found my way through the University Center campus, to a facility that housed a college I knew nothing about, a sense of anticipation and a strong desire to explore what was about to come next washed over me.
As I sat in the waiting area eagerly anticipating my meeting with an academic advisor, I knew this was going to be the first day to something great.
Two years later I am writing to you as not only a Walsh College Alumni, but as a smarter, more business-orientated individual who see’s “business in everything”. Two years later and till this day, every time I pull into the parking lot, better yet turn onto Livernois Road, I am overwhelmed with happiness.
There are no cliché’s here; Walsh is home. It doesn’t matter how terrible of a day I have had, the second I pull in and see those yellow, legal pad banners hanging from the light posts, my heart and mind are at ease.
Walsh can and will be your home if you let it. From the faculty, advisors, and countless other staff members who make themselves readily available to you when you need them, they are here for you. What I want for you is what I didn’t learn about Walsh until somewhat recently.
Fall in love with Walsh while you’re signing up for your first class, while you’re filling out silly questionnaires to win free giveaways during Welcome Week. Fall in love on your first day of school, or when you do exceptionally well on an exam, that in between juggling your family, your career, and somewhat of a social life, you managed to study so diligently for. Fall in love on the day you graduate, the moment you put on that cap and gown, while listening to powerful, inspirational leaders talk about their successes and failures in the real world. Fall in love as you walk across the stage proudly, but at the same time question, “Where do I go from here?” And then finally, fall in love all over again as an alumnus.
Life is so different once the mayhem ends, reality kicks in, and you’re faced with real world obstacles. But good thing you went to Walsh College, because you, my friend, are a couple steps ahead and everything is going to be just fine.
I want you to value and love Walsh College as much as I do. But I want you to do so now, in this moment. I knew my love story with Walsh began on that hot day in August, but little did I know it would be a love story that would continue to grow by leaps and bounds. Into the ultimate goal of actually interviewing for a position at Walsh College. Realize the value of Walsh College, its vision and standards for you as a student, and as a business professional. Take full advantage of networking opportunities and events, career fairs, Career Services, and countless other occasions that will help you prevail above the rest. Pride yourself on being a Walsh College student; this alone makes you special.
So all love stories aside, take that risk, the next step in becoming whatever it is you want to be when “you grow up”. One thing is for certain: Walsh College can and will open doors that you never thought could be opened. Make a home at Walsh…we’re waiting for you.
“To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you’re going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction.”
