Top 5 Reasons to Do an Internship
I've heard time and time again that internships really give you a leg up on the competition. There are so many good reasons why to consider doing one:
- They can provide experience related to your major. Added bonus: you'll get to add more to your resume!
- Opportunities to learn.
- A chance to showcase your talents.
- Can build meaningful relationships and expand your network.
- Potential to earn credits for college coursework.
All of this will help you with the ultimate goal of getting a full-time job after graduation. In some cases, students that perform very well during the internship are offered a permanent job!
There are two regrets I have from my undergrad years. First, I didn't do a study abroad program. It was too expensive for my pocketbook. Second, I didn't do an internship. At the time, I didn't think much of it. But looking back now, I regret that decision. In the fall of 2001, it was a very difficult time to find a job, especially for a recent grad. Even with a regular part-time office job on-campus for four years, it was difficult to find an employer to give me a chance. I went on several first and second interviews with no bites. A few people mentioned it was probably because I didn't have direct IT related work experience. If I had been involved in an internship to gain on-the-job experience, getting a full-time job might've been a little less challenging.
