Top 5 Reasons to Do an Internship
I've heard time and time again that internships really give you a leg up on the competition.  There are so many good reasons why to consider doing one:

  1. They can provide experience related to your major.  Added bonus:  you'll get to add more to your resume!
  2. Opportunities to learn.
  3. A chance to showcase your talents.
  4. Can build meaningful relationships and expand your network.
  5. Potential to earn credits for college coursework.

All of this will help you with the ultimate goal of getting a full-time job after graduation.  In some cases, students that perform very well during the internship are offered a permanent job!

My Regrets
There are two regrets I have from my undergrad years.  First, I didn't do a study abroad program.  It was too expensive for my pocketbook.  Second, I didn't do an internship.  At the time, I didn't think much of it.  But looking back now, I regret that decision.  In the fall of 2001, it was a very difficult time to find a job, especially for a recent grad.  Even with a regular part-time office job on-campus for four years, it was difficult to find an employer to give me a chance.  I went on several first and second interviews with no bites.  A few people mentioned it was probably because I didn't have direct IT related work experience.  If I had been involved in an internship to gain on-the-job experience, getting a full-time job might've been a little less challenging.

Good News for You
Our Career Services department is hosting an Internship Connection on Tuesday, February 4.  More than 20 companies are expected to attend.  This will give you an opportunity to:

  1. Talk with company representatives in person
  2. Ask questions
  3. Learn more about their internship programs

I'd highly recommend that you take advantage of this great opportunity!

If you were able to select the company, where would be your "dream" internship?
