Jerry Schafer, BAcct 1975
Schafer, corporate vice president of worldwide development for McDonald’s Corp. and a new director on the Walsh Foundation Board, helped get LaunchPad up and running with a major gift toward furnishings and technology.
During his career with McDonalds, he has lived in nine places in the U.S. and spent five years in Asia leading McDonald’s entry into the Chinese market. Currently residing in North Carolina, he now spends half his time in Latin America focusing on emerging markets.
Schafer tends to give to causes where he has a personal connection. Locally in Durham, NC, for example, he supports the McDonald House at Duke University Hospital. “I also have a personal connection with Walsh, my alma mater, and with the Detroit area, where I was born and raised,” he said.
“Even though it has been a long time since I’ve lived in Michigan, I’ve watched the economic issues affecting the region over the last 30 years, and particularly over the last five years. This is why I want to support something that is going to provide opportunity and employment,” said Schafer. “A grassroots, entrepreneurial program like this not only helps individuals figure out a way to prosper in difficult economic times, but also helps the economy.”
He also thinks it’s significant that Walsh was one of the first schools Blackstone chose and that Walsh’s LaunchPad director now advises other institutions replicating the program. “It’s a great thing for Walsh to be connected with Blackstone and for alumni to feel good about the national prominence we have received.”
