Walsh students have long been known for academic excellence. Yet, even among the high achievers, there are those students who exemplify a true understanding of their discipline as well as outstanding academic performance.

Walsh College proudly recognizes the outstanding achievements of those students who have received academic awards.  Click on one of the links below for more information about the following awards:

Below are this year's topics. Some instructors have included this opportunity within their courses. All papers must be resolution-focused when addressing  an issue regarding the free enterprise system.

Topic Development and Research Requirements

  • Papers must involve research, show detailed analysis and critical thinking, and reach issue resolution and/or recommendation. 
  • Class assignments may be considered if the topic involves original development by the student.

Papers should follow APA 5th edition publication guidelines and be between 6 and 15 pages in length. APA guidelines are available in the Library.  

Good communication skills are required.

Undergraduate Level Requirements:

  • Papers must relate to one of the suggested topics.
  • The papers must include a minimum of 3 research journals (or similar reference materials) cited within the paper and appear on a reference page; the research must follow APA guidelines.
  • Scholarly Internet references are acceptable. Do not use encyclopedic references such as Wikipedia.

Graduate:

  • Papers must relate to one of the suggested topics.
  • The papers must include a minimum of 6 research journals (or similar reference materials) cited within the paper and appear on a reference page; research must follow APA guidelines.

Judging:

Papers are blind-submitted to a panel of business professionals who are not  Walsh College faculty. The papers are reviewed under a predetermined set of guidelines that include:

·         topic development

·         research presented/interpreted

·         position presented and defended

·         overall communication skills

Submission:

Papers can be submitted as a Word document attachment to Dr. Barbara Alpern by email at: balpern@walshcollege.edu  Hard copies can be submitted to Dr. Alpern at Walsh College, 3838 Livernois, P.O. Box 7006, Troy, MI 48007-7006, or be hand delivered to one of the faculty secretaries at any campus.

Please include your email address, degree concentration, and telephone contact numbers, so we may notify you that the paper has been received and for final winner results.

The Research Institute of America Graduate Tax Award

Each academic year, the Research Institute of America Graduate Tax Award (formerly the Prentice Hall, Inc. Graduate Tax Award) recognizes an outstanding Master of Science in Taxation student for his/her academic work and contribution to the College.  The student is presented with a certificate at Commencement and a plaque is inscribed with the winner's name and displayed at the College.  In recognition of this student, the Institute each year awards the College a complete set of its Federal Tax Coordinator 2d looseleaf service.

The Research Institute of America Graduate Accounting Award

Each academic year, the Research Institute of America Graduate Accounting Award recognizes an outstanding Accounting student for his/her academic work and contribution to the College. The student is presented with a certificate at Commencement and a plaque is inscribed with the winner's name and displayed at the College. The Institute provides advanced research, practice materials, and compliance tools to tax, accounting, and corporate finance professionals.

The Everett M. Hawley, Jr. Taxation Award

Each academic year, one master degree student is honored for outstanding achievement as a student in taxation. This student is presented with a recognition certificate at commencement; a plaque is inscribed with the winner’s name and displayed at the College.

The Firman H. Hass Writing Award

Liesl M. Morelli, MST
One graduate student is honored for excellence in writing by the Detroit Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) each year at commencement. The award recognizes the best contribution to the body of knowledge relating to accounting. The student receives a certificate from the Detroit IMA chapter and a plaque is inscribed with the winner’s name and displayed at the College.

The Financial Executive Institute Award

Graduate - Pamela M. Hawkins, MBA/MSF
Undergraduate - Selena Lynn Passeno, BBA

Each year, one outstanding accounting or finance student is honored for academic achievement at commencement by the Financial Executives Institute (FEI). The student is honored with a medal which is presented at the Detroit Chapter of Financial Executives meeting. A plaque is inscribed with the winner’s name and displayed at the College.

The Walter B. Fisher Award for Excellence in Accounting

Daniel C. Meloche, BAcct
This award is given annually to one Walsh College undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the Bachelor of Accountancy program. Those chosen for the award will must achieve a CUM GPA 3.500 or higher and must have contributed time or talent to either Walsh College or the accounting profession through tutoring, club leadership, community service, or other activities. The student is presented with a cash award and certificate at Commencement and a plaque is inscribed with the winner's name and displayed at Walsh College. 

The Stanley W. Smith Taxation Manuscript Award

One student from the Master of Science in Taxation program is honored each year for having written an outstanding paper or thesis in the field of taxation. This student is presented with a recognition certificate at commencement, and a plaque is inscribed with the winner's name and displayed at the College.
