Take Charge Workshops at Walsh College

In response to the great numbers of displaced workers in southeast Michigan, Walsh College is offering free skill-building workshops. The Walsh Take Charge initiative is made possible through a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund. Unemployed individuals may register for any of the workshops described below. Certificates will be issued on completion of the program, and certificates may be used to waive the the application to a Walsh College degree program. The workshops, faculty and instructors have received rave reviews and messages of gratitude.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Keyboarding

Are you still hunting and pecking? Are you a two fingered tornado on the keyboard? Learn basic typing in this workshop. Knowledge of basic word processing helpful but not necessary.  At the conclusion of this workshop you will know:

  • The correct placement of fingers on the keyboard
  • A few keyboard shortcuts
  • Basic typing exercises to practice at home

INSTRUCTOR: Lesia Mahon, PMP  is an adjunct assistant professor at Walsh College. She has worked in the automotive industry for 20 years at Delphi Corporation and General Motors.  Her responsibilities at Delphi included managing a corporate-wide suggestion program and leading process re-engineering teams. In addition, Mahon is an advisory board member  of  Total Quality Systems Software, Inc.  She holds both a Master of Science in Information Management and Communication and Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems from Walsh College.


The Art of Leadership

The workshop is intended for individuals who want to learn about different leadership styles. Taking this knowledge they will learn how to use their own leadership style to effectively increase their competence in working across a wide variety of corporate settings. The workshop will focus on goal setting, supervision, employee improvement and training/coaching.
Skill development:

  • Learn about leadership styles
  • Identify personal leadership style
  • Learn to improve relationships using this knowledge.

INSTRUCTOR: Joseph R. Corace has spent over 30 years as a business strategist and corporate architect. He began his career in quality engineering with General Motors Corporation then serving in C-level management roles for several manufacturing organizations. As the first CEO of Inalfa Roof Systems he grew the company from its startup to over $120 million in North American sales and over 700 employees and as president and CEO of Forum Motors Group, he turned around two automotive dealerships, increasing revenue and earning prestigious customer service distinctions from Ford Motor Company and Daimler Chrysler. Corace earned a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Wayne State University.

INSTRUCTORS: Laurie Siebert, Cheryl Carr, Elayne Steinhardt, and Brenda Meller
Laurie Siebert is director of Career Services at Walsh College. Cheryl Carr is an outreach coordinator/advisor and Elayne Steinhardt is an advisor for Career Services. Together, they assist students and alumni in the pursuit of their career goals. Each is experienced with individual job search assistance, including job search techniques, practice interviews, and general career consultation. They also work with local businesses to help them recruit new employees from the qualified pool of Walsh graduates through on-campus recruiting, job fairs, and online job listings. Brenda Meller is the marketing manager at Walsh College, and has experience using social media such as LinkedIn.com as a job search and networking tool.

    INSTRUCTOR: Joan Kelly, PMP is currently under contract with Right Management, assisting displaced workers with job search strategies. She holds both Master of Public Administration and Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education degrees from University of Michigan. She is a skilled instructor and facilitator in project management, root cause analysis, process improvement, change management and leadership development.


    Don’t Leave Your Image to Chance!

    To remain competitive and relevant in the Now Economy, it’s crucial to maintain a positive presence. Since 60-65 percent of the world’s population thinks and reacts visually, why not capitalize on this truth with “impression management” for a powerful, unified image?
    Content Highlights:
        • Learn what your personal image is, and why it’s more vital to success in business than at any time in history.
        • Understand why it is important to express your unique value.
        • Identify the role of appearance, body language, and paralanguage in your personal image.
        • Maintain a clear and positive image with consistency (where to begin; mistakes to avoid).
        • Seven practical methods to reinforce a cohesive personal image.

    INSTRUCTORS: Jill Jordan and Patty Buccellato
    Patty Buccellato, AICI, CIP, is president of Refined Images, a company specializing for more than 15 years in image and personal branding. Patty holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising from Western Michigan University, and is a Certified Professional Member of the Association of Image Consultants International.
    Jill Anne Jordan has more than 20 years experience in sales, marketing and leadership development, and is devoted to supporting others who are reinventing or remodeling their lives. Jill received her BS from Michigan State University has personally interviewed over 1,000 individuals in her lifetime – making her an expert on what works and what doesn’t in a job search.


    Social Media for Job Seekers

    Networking is one of the most powerful (and successful) methods for job search, especially in challenging business climates. Are you using social media sites (LinkedIn.com, Facebook, Twitter) to your advantage? Attend this three-session course to learn techniques that can help to supercharge your job search. Bring your own laptop (helpful, but not required) for hands-on instruction. Session 1 is an introduction to the main three sites: LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Session 2 will give you insights into how to make the most of your presence on LinkedIn for your job search, and Session 3 will give you the opportunity to learn from others who have success stories using these sites. Each session will contain opportunities for you to incorporate your learnings in a hands-on workshop, and participants will be asked to apply their learnings each week. Laptops are helpful but not required.

    Life Planning

    Peter F. Drucker said “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” If you think about a process map of your life, what does your past tell you about your future? In this three-hour workshop you will create a timeline of your past, present and future, and define your vision of a life well-lived.

    ·         Instructor:  Dr. Sheila R. Ronis is Director of the MBA/MSSL Program at Walsh College. She previously taught in the MBA programs at the University of Detroit Mercy and Oakland University.  She is also President of The University Group, Inc., a management consulting firm, and think tank specializing in strategic management, visioning, national security and public policy.  She is currently chairing the Vision and Guiding Principles Working Group of the Project on National Security Reform in Washington, D.C. www.pnsr.org.   Her B.S. is in Physics and Mathematics.  Her M.A. and Ph.D. are in Organizational Behavior and General Social Systems Theory from the Ohio State University.

     


     

     

    Crisis Planning: Household Budgeting

    The instructor will offer tools and tips to help you through this personal financial crisis.

    ·         Instructor: Professor John Moore has been teaching at Walsh College since 1994.  He was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the DeMattia Group, and has held numerous other executive positions.

    ·         Instructor: Paul Raine, JD is an adjunct instructor at Walsh College in the MBA program. He has an extensive background in technology and several years experience representing creditor’s rights.  For the past several years, Mr. Raine has immersed himself in litigation, litigation management, post-foreclosure eviction issues and resolution of real estate title issues. Before entering the practice of law, Mr. Raine held various technology-related positions.

    ·         Instructor: Lee Meadows, PhD is a professor of management at Walsh College and consults with organizations and individuals in human resources and career development. He writes a column for the Oakland Business Review, is a contributor to the Detroit News and a published author.
