LinkedIn for Students: The New App

Sitting with my husband Chris Meller in a Starbucks today and helping him to use the new LinkedIn for Students app as he kicks his dream job search into overdrive. We're both finding the new app to be interesting. As an advanced LinkedIn user (and self-proclaimed LinkedIn advocate), I'm helping to guide him through the process. We're both learning a bit as we go. Here are some key takeaways:

  1. The App is Pretty Slick. It serves up alumni from your alma mater, suggests careers (by job title), plus there's a "swipe for extra credit" where you can continue to read suggestions.
  2. It offers companies and alumni at those companies. When it Serves up Alumni, you can CLICK to View their Profiles. In the full version of LinkedIn, you can still find these alumni, but it's a bit more cumbersome. This is a huge time saver and also helps candidates like Chris connect with alumni from his alma mater, thereby supercharging his networking efforts. After all, who wouldn't want to help a fellow alum?
  3. You Can't Personalize Invitations via the LinkedIn Students App. This is a huge caution, as it's fine to send an invitation without personalization, but there is a greater likelihood that your invitation will be accepted if you personalize the invite. Plus you start building a rapport with a personalized invite. Therefore, I guided Chris to use the LinkedIn for Students App to find the alumni, then the full PC version of LinkedIn to look up their profile and send a personalized invitation.
  4. You Can Add Targeted Job Titles. Select a job title, and LinkedIn shares the salary range, median salary (through BLS), description, alumni who hold that role, top companies for the job title, top skills for the role, and similar roles. All really helpful and reminds me of a free mini "career coaching" education.

I would highly recommend the new LinkedIn for Students app for any college student who is seeking their first job, or a career change.
What do you think? Have you used the app? Has this post inspired you to give it a look? Comment  below, then click to share.

As for Chris, I think he'll find this morning's LinkedIn training to be useful in his career search. Send him an invitation to connect and wish him luck, and tell him Brenda sent you: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophermeller
