Walsh Alumni Around the World: Urte Maciulyte (BBA '17)

Urte Maciulyte is an alumna whose Walsh journey has taken her around the world from her native country of Lithuania, to the United States, and finally to the place she now calls home - the United Kingdom.

Urte was an international student taking business courses at Oakland Community College when her interest in Walsh was sparked. She was excited to learn about Walsh’s marketing program, the number of credits she could transfer, and the affordability of classes for Walsh’s international students compared to other colleges and universities. However, it was a piece of clothing that sealed the deal for Urte.

“One thing that really helped me make my decision was a simple t-shirt that had Walsh’s slogan written in Lithuanian, my native language,” said Urte. “It made me feel very welcomed. I thought to myself, ‘This is the place where I belong.”

As a Walsh student, Urte began exploring her interests in marketing by getting involved with the Marketing Association. In March of 2017, Urte joined members on a tour of a marketing agency during an important time in her Walsh journey.

“I was close to graduating, and I believe just like any other student at that stage, I started having fears of what would happen next. I did not know much about companies I would like to work for. I did not even know where to start my research.”

The tour of GTB, a global marketing agency best known in Detroit for its work with Ford Motor Company, was the perfect opportunity for Urte to learn how to jump-start her career in the industry.

“GTB impressed me with the great company culture and talented people, but also, the work they do with various companies across the world. Right then and there I knew this was my dream company,” said Urte.

GTB was Urte’s dream company, but there were not any current openings that met the description of her dream job. Despite not knowing what was in store for her, Urte kept her goals big and her options open. In addition to working at GTB one day, Urte aspired to live in a big city. In 2018, she packed her bags, made the flight across the Atlantic Ocean, and settled in to her new home in London.

Urte wasted no time applying for a position at GTB’s London office, and her persistence paid off. A few weeks later she received a phone call from GTB requesting an interview. Three days after her interview, Urte received a job offer.

“The most important thing I learned during my Walsh journey and job search is to believe in myself. It’s important to have clear goals and not let anyone tell you they are impossible, because I am a living example that everything is possible."

Make the most of your Walsh experience by taking advantage of resources like Career Services and Student Life that are here to help you go the extra mile, or a few thousand miles in Urte’s case. It might just be the start of your own success story.
