LaunchPad Member News

Walsh College LaunchPad Member News:

The Walsh College LaunchPad Team received 160 essay submissions and 96 marketing submissions for the 2016 ‘Make It Better’ Competition – double the amount received last year!!  The competition was open to Michigan high school students, community college students residing in Michigan and Walsh College students and alumni.  During the past few weeks, Walsh College staff has been busy traveling and presenting cash prizes to the winning students from Troy High School, Clarkston High School, Lakeview High School, East Detroit High School, Frankenmuth High School and St. Clair Community College.

On Monday, April 11th, Alums LaunchPad Director Carol Glynn and LaunchPad Member Julie Andreae of Secure Beginnings visited the Marketing 543 Class: Creativity and Innovation. Carol shared the co-curricular LaunchPad program offerings available to Walsh students and alumnus. Julie told an emotional story about what inspired her to start her business and some of the hurdles she encountered along the way. Julie and her founders invented a breathable crib mattress after experiencing the loss of infants who rolled over in the middle of the night and were found face down on a fiber-filled mattress. Secure Beginnings’ operations are located in downtown Detroit and business has grown exponentially over the past year.

Walsh College LaunchPad member and alum, Jesse Ford of The Work Inc. presented at the Michigan Professional Business Association (MPBA) Explore Speaker Series on Tuesday, April 12 at the Macomb-OU Incubator. Jesse talked about having an “entrepreneurial bug” since he was a young saxophone player and how he transitioned from a comfortable corporate job to start a multifaceted creative digital media agency in Downtown Detroit with partnership ties to firms in LA and NY. He talked about the rapid shift in workforce desires amongst millenniums that has occurred and how his company had to adjust in order promote and maintain a creative environment. The Work, Inc. has now outgrown their Rivertown office space and will be moving to a larger facility in Downtown Detroit.
