Giving Back to the Community: Anita Hicks, MSM '04

Dr. Anita Hicks, member of the Walsh Foundation Board of Directors, is a graduate of the Master of Management program (’04) and has a diverse background, holding management positions in aviation, professional sports and higher education. She served as director of corporate marketing for the Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment from 2001 to 2009 and has been in leadership positions at Oakland University since 2010. She was the first doctoral graduate of the School of Education and Human Services at Oakland University. Her doctoral focus was on the specific needs of adult learners and how services offered at universities can contribute to or impede the success of their adult students. Dr. Hicks is active with local community organizations and serves on the board of the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan, the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Michigan and Zonta International. She also partners with several national educational groups and is a committee member at NACAS and the Women of Color STEM Conference and chair of NASPA’s knowledge community. Dr. Hicks was named the 2017 Faculty Research Scholar of the Year for excellence in teaching and service as an associate professor at the University of Phoenix. She was also selected as one of the 2019 Michigan Chronicle Women of Excellence and chosen by the president of Oakland University to represent the institution at the Michigan American Council on Education.
