Student Perspective: Chris Gagnon

After earning an undergraduate degree from Ohio State University, Chris Gagnon was ready to move back home to Michigan and switch paths from finance to accounting. He was looking for a school that specialized in business, offered classes taught by industry professionals with real-world experience, and provided the support necessary to help students earn a CPA designation. Gagnon’s search led him to Walsh and the Master of Science in Accountancy program.

Personal Attention

Coming from a university with over 60,000 students, Gagnon had to adjust to a few changes when he started at Walsh and he was thrilled to do so. He appreciated how the small class sizes allowed him to interact with faculty and other students. Gagnon also liked that student resources like Career Services and academic advising were easily accessible to students and how every faculty and staff member he encountered was willing to help him wherever needed.

“Deborah Mourray and Brenda Paine have been instrumental to my academic planning and accounting career,” said Gagnon. “Being able to email, call, and visit them with questions related to classes, scheduling, internships, and CPA exams has provided me with a smooth transition into my career.”

Real-World Experience and Flexibility

Gagnon believes real-world experience is one of the most valuable ways to expand professional skills and build connections with local employers and business professionals. He respected the fact that 95% of Walsh faculty bring real-world business and technology experience into the classroom.

While planning for his future career, Gagnon has many responsibilities on his plate including CPA exam preparation, school, work, and family. His top priority is supporting and being around his family, so flexibility was an important factor in his decision to pursue a graduate degree at Walsh.

“Walsh’s flexibility in scheduling, including the option of online courses, has allowed me to successfully balance my commitments,” said Gagnon.

As for Gagnon’s future plans, he is excited to begin work at Plante Moran as a full-time audit staff member and see where his passion for accounting takes him.

His advice for someone considering Walsh is to understand what you are looking for in a graduate school and degree program, and what kind of support you may need to be successful.

“If you value quality business and IT education, are working or planning to work while earning your degree, and want to be exposed to valuable recruiters and opportunities, then Walsh is the perfect fit for you,” said Gagnon. “Walsh is where my plans became reality.”
