HLC Reaffirmation of Accreditation

Walsh is preparing for reaffirmation of its accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2020. The purpose of these pages is to inform our community about the process itself and to encourage all of us to take part in this important opportunity to demonstrate Walsh’s commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and compliance with requirements set by the U.S. Department of Education. The team of peer evaluators will be here on October 19-20, 2020.

Founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States, The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) oversees the accreditation of higher education institutions in Michigan and 18 other states in the North Central region. HLC’s mission is to serve the common good by assuring and advancing the quality of higher learning.

Reaffirmation of accredited HLC colleges and universities is intended to evaluate the continued quality of education provided by an institution and to identify potential areas for improvement. Every 10 years, the HLC’s peer reviewers evaluate our practices, our evidence, and achievement of student learning against each of the standards and criteria for accreditation and for compliance with the Department of Education’s requirements for federal financial aid eligibility. This evaluation is based upon our self-study, the materials we provide as evidence, and the interviews that the HLC peer review team will have with members of our community during the visit. This reaffirmation of quality and compliance serves to inform potential students and employers about Walsh as well as other universities and colleges regarding potential transfer credit decisions.

Walsh follows the “Open Pathway” for accreditation which follows a 10-year cycle and, like all pathways, is focused on quality assurance and continuous institutional improvement. The Open Pathway is unique in that its improvement component, the Quality Initiative, affords institutions the opportunity to pursue improvement projects that meet current needs and aspirations.
