Title IX & Nondiscrimination Policy



Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities in federally funded schools at all levels. In compliance with Title IX and applicable federal and state laws, the College prohibits sex discrimination of all types, including sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual misconduct, relationship violence, stalking and retaliation.



Notice of Nondiscrimination

The College strives to maintain an environment free of discrimination and harassment. The College prohibits discrimination or harassment based on any protected status on the basis of such legally protected characteristics as a person’s race, color, religion, gender, age, height, weight, national origin, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or disability. The College complies with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination including, but not limited, to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, as amended by the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination and Employment Act of 1967, Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and Michigan’s Persons With Disabilities Civil Rights Act.

The College’s Title IX Coordinator monitors the College’s compliance with Title IX, ensures appropriate education and training for students and employees, coordinates investigations and develops an appropriate response to Title IX reports.

Reporting an Incident

The College strongly encourages the reporting of sex discrimination incidents. However, the College encourages every person who may have experienced harm to get the support and information he or she needs, regardless of whether he or she wishes to report an incident to the College.

A person reporting an incident under the Policy on Harassment, Discrimination and Sexual Misconduct may submit an official complaint form or report the incident or concern verbally or in writing to one the following individuals:

  1. The Title IX Coordinator.
  2. The appropriate department chairperson, if the complaint is against a faculty member or instructor.
  3. The chief academic officer, if the complaint is against a faculty department chairperson.
  4. The president of the College, if the complaint is against the chief academic officer or some other officer of the College.
  5. Any member of the Board of Trustees, if the complaint is against the president of the College or a member of the Board of Trustees.
  6. The chief academic officer, if the complaint occurs in connection with a non-credit course or seminar.
  7. The College’s human resources office, if the complaint is against a staff or faculty member, a third party, or if the person reporting is uncertain.

While anonymous reports may be submitted and will be carefully reviewed, the College’s ability to address alleged sex and gender based discrimination reported by anonymous sources is significantly limited.
